Parsons House Preston Hollow Hosts “Virtual Dementia Tour”

Free, interactive event, with materials from Second Wind Dreams, offered to help the community understand the effects of dementia

Preston Hollow, TX, May 26, 2011–Impeded by limited motor skills, blurred vision, and incessant, distracting noises, people afflicted with Alzheimer’s and dementia live in a confusing, chaotic world and those who care for them have no way of knowing exactly what it’s like to live with these debilitating conditions.  To better understand the effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia, Parsons House Preston Hollow, an assisted living and memory care community, is holding a “Virtual Dementia Tour” on Thursday, June 9, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Parsons House Preston Hollow, 4205 West Northwest Highway in Dallas. The Tour is offered to caregivers, medical staff and community members seeking to understand how dementia is affecting their loved one.

The Virtual Dementia Tour™ is an experiential kit used to simulate the symptoms of age-related Alzheimer’s and dementia to help caregivers better identify and cope with ‘ the behaviors and needs of those in their care. Professional caregivers and community members that participate will be fitted with gear that simulates a range of physical symptoms and then asked to perform simple, everyday tasks.  Tour administrators observe their performance and note the impact of the simulated dementia conditions.

“We believe that educating people on what these diseases are really like will help both seniors and their caregivers,” said Victoria Hernandez, Assisted Living Director of Parsons House Preston Hollow. “Learning to create a positive environment for those with dementia can only come from attempting to walk in their shoes. We hope that by hosting The Virtual Dementia Tour, we are helping to lessen the gap between our elders and ourselves and giving ourselves even more preparation to meet their needs.”

The Virtual Dementia Tour™ concept and kits were created by P.K. Beville, Founder of nonprofit Second Wind Dreams®. The apparatus includes distortion glasses, sensory deprivation gloves, and audio that replicates dementia-induced confusion. Parsons House Preston Hollow’s purchase of the kits from Second Wind Dreams will be used toward the fulfillment of dreams for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities across the nation.
