Sacramento Eye Doctor to Perform Site-Restoring Surgeries in Vietnam

Dr. Mark Drabkin to make trip to Vietnam as volunteer for SEE International

Sacramento, CA, April 11, 2011 — On April 25, Sacramento ophthalmologist and Davis resident, Mark Drabkin, M.D., will arrive in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, the capital of Vietnam, as a volunteer for Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE) International. Dr. Drabkin is donating his time and professional services to restore eyesight, provide lectures and exchange valuable skills while in the country.  He will remain in Ho Chi Minh City through April 28.

At the invitation of eye surgeons in developing countries, and with the approval of local health and civic authorities, SEE International recruits, organizes, and deploys numerous small surgical teams to underserved communities worldwide. Since its founding in 1974, SEE International and its international network of eye surgeons have examined more than 3.2 million patients and performed over 400,000 sight-restoring operations at no cost to patients.

“I have been on several volunteer trips with SEE International and it’s always an exciting challenge to get into the country and perform surgeries,” said Dr. Drabkin.  “It’s also very interesting for me to see how eye care professionals are doing things in that country and, at the same time, I get to help people who would most likely not get the help they need. It’s amazing.”

“SEE International has had as big an impact as the doctors themselves, who are helping to eradicate blindness and to reach people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to eye surgery or eye care,” said Drabkin.  “I get just as much from the trips that I put in, if not more.”

Mark Drabkin, M.D. works in the Ophthalmology Department at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center.  He received the both the Every Day Hero Award from Kaiser South in 2003 and the Excellence in Cross Culture Medicine and Humanist Award from Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center in 2006.  He has been a practicing ophthalmologist in Sacramento for more than 10 years.  As a volunteer with SEE International, Dr. Drabkin has traveled to Nepal, the Philippines, Nicaragua and Ghana, restoring eyesight and helping to give local doctors the skills and tools they need to help their communities.
