From a marathon and concert to a parade and military ball, the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation will honor veterans from wars of the 20th and 21st centuries throughout the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8. Although this year the Full Marathon has been canceled, the Half Marathon is a go, starting at UCSB University Plaza at 7:15 a.m., and registration is open online at until the day before the run. Everyone is encouraged to cheer the runners on the last mile from Shoreline Park to Leadbetter Beach from 8:30 a.m. to noon for Line the Veterans Mile, and while there keep your eyes-to-the-skies for a flyover of vintage aircraft around 9:30 a.m. The 20th annual Military Ball begins at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening at Fess Parker’s, 633 E. Cabrillo Blvd. and features a three-course dinner, live music, cocktail hour, dancing to the sounds of Art Deco and award presentations. And a flyover at noon also announces the start of the Veteran’s Day Parade at 1400 State St. on Sunday ending at 633 E. Cabrillo Blvd. A variety of military vehicles along with WWII re-enactors highlight the parade, and the weekend concludes with a free Veteran’s Day Concert featuring the Westmont Orchestra & Choir, led by Michael Shasberger, at Fess Parker Double Tree Inn, Outdoor Pavilion, 633 E. Cabrillo Blvd. And the amazing display and precision of a Parachute Team tie the parade and concert together when they land by the hotel adding a new wow factor to the weekend events. All events are free except the Military Ball. For more information call 259-4394 or
