Outreach program brings health education to those most in need in Santa Barbara

Parish nurse Sharon Troll, left, demonstrates safety techniques to 103-year-old Santa Barbara resident Edythe Kirchmaier during a fall prevention class for seniors at First Presbyterian Church in Santa Barbara. Injuries related to falls are a leading cause of loss of independence, hospitalization and even death among older adults, and the cost to the U.S. health-care system nearly $20 billion a year. The Parish Nursing Community Outreach Program brings health care and health education directly to people most in need in the Santa Barbara community. As the primary funding source of the Parish Nursing Program, operated by Cottage Health System, the St. Francis Foundation of Santa Barbara makes it possible for parish nurses to meet the health-care needs of thousands of individuals, seniors and families in Santa Barbara’s culturally diverse community each year.
